Basic Information of Domain Name
What is a domain name?
Domains are addresses of Web, your locations on
Internet. They are shortcuts for communication and access of
information. Register domain names to identify yourself and promote
your business. The following are some examples of domain names that
may seem familiar to you: yahoo.com, AOL.com.
Characters Within A Domain /
Naming Conventions?
Domain names are alpha-numeric and may use a - (dash).
The dash cannot be at the beginning or end of a domain name. Domain
names may be up to 67 characters total(including the
suffix).
What is an IP address?
Each computer on Internet has one or more than one
numerical addresses to identify its location on Web. The numerical
addresses are called IP. Here is an example of IP address:
210.77.145.16. However, numbers like this are hard for human memory
and domain names are designed to relieve the memory
burden.
Who is administrating the
registration of domain names?
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers
(ICANN) is the non-profit corporation that was formed to assume
responsibility for the IP address space allocation, protocol
parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root
server system management functions previously performed under U.S.
Government contract by IANA and other entities. For more
information please visit ICANN website:
ICANN.
What is DNS (Domain Name
Server)?
Domain Name Server converts domain names into IP
addresses which computers can recognize. For example, if someone
wants to visit 'e-nick' (www.e-nick.org), DNS translates this
domain name into its IP address 210.77.145.16. This process enables
the computer to have access for the web server directed by the
domain name.
What is the syntax of domain
names?
Top Level Domain
A domain name consists of two or more words that are
separated by dots. The word at the right end is called the
top-level domain name. The following are some most frequently used
top-level domain names:
*.COM--is used for commercial organizations. It is the most
common top-level domain name. Anyone can register domain names
ended with .COM.
*.NET--is originally applied to Internet organizations such
as Internet service and maintenance providers. It is now available
for everyone.
*.ORG--is designed for all kinds of organizations including
non-profit organizations. Anyone can register.ORG ended domain
names.
Country codes
The top level domains with two letters like .cn, .uk, .de and
.jp are called country code top level domains. (ccTLDs). .cn is the
top level domain of China and its registration is supervised by
ICANN. The second level domain names ended with .cn are simply
called national domain names. Different counties have their own
regulations and policies for registering the second-level country
code domain names. It is recommended that you consult domain name
registering organizations or companies for the relevant policies
and terms. Some domain names registering companies provide top
level country code registration except for registering top-level
domains (.com, .net and .org). ICANN does not authorize registrars
to provide services for country code domain names registration.
Second Level Domains
The next level of top level domain names is what we usually
call second level domain names. Take photonhost.com as an example,
the possible format of domain names is something.photonhost.com. In
this case, 'something' here is called the host name or third-level
domain name.
What is a URL?
URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It is your
complete Internet address. It is the unique string of characters,
such as http://www.e-nick.org , that directs people to specific
locations on the Internet. Just as an address written on an
envelope directs the post-office to deliver a letter straight to
mailbox, a URL typed into an Internet browser leads directly to the
location of a specific resource on the Internet.
Why should I pay for domain
registration, others advertise it for free?
There are some misleading advertisements for cheap or
even FREE domain registration. Read the fine print. They all have a
disclaimer InterNIC will bill you separately $70 for two
years".
Do I need to register all
three domain name extensions: .com, .net and .org?
You will realize that the expense for domain name
registration and support is minor compared to the marketing expense
to promote and establish your domain name in the marketplace. The
last thing you want to happen is to have someone else (your
competitor in most cases) benefit from your efforts in establishing
your name. You will see competitors registering names close to
yours, trying to trying to benefit from typos your visitors may
make. For example, someone registered internik.net in order to
piggyback on the reputable internic.net. Our name is a good example
as well.
I misspelled the domain name
when I registered. Can I change the spelling of my domain name?
No.
How do I use my new
domain?
Once you have completed the registration process, the
next step is choosing a hosting service. If you already know who
will host your web site you can specify their DNS servers at the
subscription. If you haven't decided yet, leave the DNS servers
blank, you can always add them later in the support section of our
web site.
What happens if I don't
pay?
Failure to pay your registration fees will result in
your name being deleted from the Registry and made available for
others to register. e-nick does not "warehouse" domain names. In
the case of domain name(s) renewals, failure to pay will result in
deletion of your domain name from the Registry. This can have
unintended repercussions. If your domain name is attached to a web
site, your web site will no longer be accessible.
How long is the registration
period?
Top Level Domains can now be registered for up to 10
years. You will be asked to select the number of years you wish to
register your Domain Name for during the tion process.
Does The Registry offer any
discounts for registering multiple Domain Names?
Yes. www.e-nick.org offers significant price breaks for
customers who are interested in purchasing multiple Domain Names
through our Reseller Program.
Registration System
Why there is no information
of the domain name I just registered on other websites?
This is a real-time registration system. Domain names
registered on this system will be sent to Registry database. After
you successfully registered, you can find your information on whois
database. After you setup DNS, your domain name is ready for use.
InterNIC.net updates information of domain names through
Registry main database. The information is refreshed one time
everyday (at GMT 6:00-8:00 or eastern time of USA 1:00-3:00). Due
to this update procedure, you can not find the information of your
domain name instantly after registration. In most cases, you are
able to find the information of the domain name until 8:30 (GMT)
next day on InterNIC.
The information of registration provided by most websites
comes from InterNIC.net so that you can't find the domain you have
just registered on those sites or the search result is 'this domain
name is available'
How to register DNS?
( Go to
NSIregistry and make a
registration. It's free ) - This information is obsolete now.
Currently we have our own interface for registering a DNS
servers. Unfortunately this interface is not available for our
clients for now.
Please contact us in order to register/update DNS servers in
your domain name. This is free service.
Our status
What is a registrar?
A registrar is an organization or company that is
either authorized by ICANN(Internet Corporation for Assigned Names
& Numbers, an organization dedicated to Internet governance) to
provide registration services for the .com, .net and .org global
top-level domain names, or is authorized by its respective
government to register domain names within a specific TLD(domain
name extension). A registrar must also be authorized by the
registry for a top level domain to act as an agent of the registry
to process domain name registrations, where the agent is not a
reseller. The registrar is also responsible for creating and
maintaining a WHOIS database for its customers.
Is e-nick.org a
registrar?
No, e-nick.org is autorized reseller of
BulkRegister.COM.
BulkRegister.COMis a company
that work only with resellers, not with end clients. By this
reasons its prices are very low, so is ours.
What if e-nick.org stops
their activity?
If e-nick.org stops activity, your domain name be
transmitted free of charge to another (special, internal) reseller
of
BulkRegister.COM. Then you
will have the possibility either to keep on working with this
reseller or to transfer the domain name with another
registrar.
Who is the legal registrant
of a domain name?
The "registrant" of a domain name is the original
administrative contact listed at the time of registration,
regardless of whether the administrative contact information has
been changed since then. In other words, the registrant of a domain
name is the individual whose name and contact information were
initially associated with the user name and password profile for
the domain name when registered. If the administrative contact
information has been changed since the original registration, the
most recent administrative contact information entered will be
visible in the WHOIS record. However, this information may not be
that of the actual registrant of the domain name.
Determining Domain Name
Ownership
The owner of a domain name is determined by the person
or organization displayed at the top of the whois record. The
administrative, technical, and billing contacts are individuals who
the organization trusts to handle issues involving the domain name
record. In some cases, the technical contact is an individual of
the Internet service provider, and the administrative contact is a
representative of the of the domain name owner. Regardless of who
is listed as the administrative and technical contacts, the owner
of the domain is listed as the registrant.
URL and e-mail forwarding
What is URL forwarding?
URL forwarding will automatically send visitors to a
URL that you specify whenever they type your domain name in their
browser. We support many different types of URL forwarding. Please
consult with the information provided when you configure the
forwarding.
What is e-mail

E-mail forwarding allows you to have all e-mail sent to
your domain to be forwarded to a e-mail address that you specify.
For example, mail sent to [email protected], can be configured
to go to: [email protected].
How much does it cost to use
URL and e-mail forwarding?

personal web sites. You get also ability to use server parced HTML
files. You get also the FORMMAIL script. You get ability to host
any client side technologies like java, javascript, flash etc. You
DO NOT get CGI-BIN, PHP, Perl or similar server side technologies.
You DO NOT get FTP access. You DO GET web interface to your web

How can I get FTP access or
extra features?
Go to
Photonhost.com, choose a
hosting plan and create account.
How do I setup my host?
First you must register a domain name.
After receiving the handle and the password from us, you need
to log to your account. You must click on small letter (f) next to
your domain name. There you must set your forwarding to
&W&. You must write down the name servers you must use
(currently fw1.e-nick.photonhost.com and
fw2.e-nick.photonhost.com). then you must set these name servers on
your domain name, this is done by clicking on your domain name, and
filling these DNS servers, in appropriate fields.
How do I setup my host?!?!?
I did not understand anything about this :(
Register a domain name.
then contact us. Explayn what do you want. We will help you.
:)))
On the site I saw second
option for setting the host?
Yes. At the moment the second option is exactly as
first one. We have plans to improve the host (as you probably
notice, currently is aforward to system domain name). The
development will be ready at about end of April 2002.
On the site I saw url as
http://XXXX.COM.web.e-nick.photonhost.com/ what is this for? Do I
need to know/use this?!?!
This is the system URL from previous question. You do
not need to know this URL. However, you may use it as is. Examples
are - Let your website points to Under Construction page, but you
develop your site there. Other example is - use this for storage
and host/forward your web site on/to different web
server.
I have registred domain, I
already set the redirect, but when I go to my domain (or to
http://XXXX.COM.web.e-nick.photonhost.com/), I get e-nick web site.
